A couple of weeks ago, we talked about 5 characteristics of a servant of the Lord. There are quite a few verses in the Bible than emphasize the importance of service, my favorite is Matthew 20:28 – “…just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
If we’re to be like Jesus, you can see that one of the most significant things he came to do was to serve us, and we should in turn serve other people around us. However, serving isn’t that easy. I don’t think it comes naturally to our fleshly nature. It’s one of those things that I think starts off as a fake it till you make it type situation, and then one day you wake up and realize it’s a habit!
I don’t know about you, but that’s how it easy for me. I like to say this prayer for a heart of service often, so the Holy Spirit can guide me as I try to become a servant of the Lord.
Prayer for a Heart of Service
I thank you for this day, I thank you for my life and health. I thank you for my sound mind and able body. As I work towards aligning my heart with yours Lord, I pray that I’ll start to develop an attitude of servitude. I thank you Father for the freedom I have in you, and I pray that I’ll use that freedom and good health to serve those around me through love. I pray that you’ll open the eyes of heart to notice any opportunities of service that come up around me today. Let me be in tune with the Spirit in me, and open to the direction of the Spirit as I come across people around me who might need my service. I ask that I’ll be willing to count other people more significant than myself. That I’ll be able to sacrifice those things I hold on to tightly in order to serve other people. And as I come across ways to serve people today, I pray that I’ll do it with a willing and cheerful heart, just as your son willingly came to serve me. In all this, I pray that you will glorified as I serve those around me. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
